I like the Fat Cat. It's pretty paid back, and kind of hidden, so you feel like your going to a secret place. Plus if you're a musician you are free to join in a lot of the time.

If you are only going to be in NYC for a visit, and you want to experience a huge part of jazz history, than you have to go to the Village Vanguard. Its been there since the 1930's. Its a very cool basement club with black and white pictures of all the jazz masters, and they ALL have played there. They still do. I have to admit that I walked across the stage there just so I could have stood in the same place John Coltrane stood. All the seats are good, and its a fair deal at $35 a set with $10 of free drinks included.

For the new young lions on the NYC scene, try the Jazz Gallery. Only $15 a set. The musicians are great and very creative. I've seen some shows there that were better than at the Vanguard, or any other NYC club. The atmosphere is just white walls with paintings and/or photos. You sit on a folding chair, and bring your own drinks. The music is great there.

If you can get to Fat Cat on Monday night, you will see the Ari Hoening group. He is a great drummer with a great band, and Fat Cat is a great place.

PS-If you would like an opinion of the best shows on the nights that you will be in town, you can e mail me the dates that you will be there. I have seen most of the NYC musicians. I would be happy to give you my opinion of the best shows available to you.
I had help getting started in jazz, a few years ago, I would be happy to help a new person, now that I can.
