Exactly two(2) days ago, I was ripping music using Window Media Player and my system froze up. In order to close the program, I had to disconnect using the power switch on my tower/hard-drive. Upon rebooting, I received a system error message stateing," Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt; Windows root>/system 32/hal.dll." Please re-install a copy of the above file. My question is,(How do I accomphish this now that I'm not able to re-boot my system?) Your assistance and U guys are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ole-Skool.

You are missing a very important and basic part of Windows. HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer. Anyway, Do you have your Windows CD? Tap on F8 repeatedly while booting, and see if you can get to the Command prompt. Once there, copy hal.dll from the Windows CD.

I've encountered that before. If i remember it right, i used Windows XP cd and the recovery console and I re-copied hal.dll from the CD and i repaired the bootsector. I dont remember the details though.

Try booting into Safe Mode and run a System restore.

Otherwise you can run Windows Repair from your Windows CDROM.
