ANSWER:
India didn't attack the bowlers early own but the Aussies attacked the bowlers early own and lost their energy and wickets, India didn't lose wickets and they were defending till the last 20 overs, so India had wicket in their hand till the very end. So, India went own to make 291/4, the wickets fallen was:
Sovrav Ganguly:41(59)
Yuvaraj Singh:39 I don't know how much bowls.
Sachin Tendulkar:79. I don't know how much bowls.
Rahul Dravid:13(14)
and
Dhoni stood not out on 50 from 35 balls
Robin Uthappa made 30 from 18 balls and stood not out.
Australia were 283/7 and fell short of just 8 runs.

if you look at the margin of win, then it was a narrow win for India since this was a single digit run victory (by 8 runs). From time to time, a country can defeat Australia narrowly but consistently beating them is not possible. There was some controversy in Ricky Ponting's dismissal but i'd say that was a fair dismissal. Also a no ball was bowled by an Indian bowler, but the umpire didn't notice it -- a free hit chance was denied to Australia because of that, and Matthew Hayden or Andrew Symonds would have faced the free hit (a boundary likely would have occurred). Who knows what might have happened if the no ball was called for -- the margin of victory would then have been 3 to 4 runs only for India.
But it was a good solid batting by Dhoni and Utthapa, which led to a massive score of 291. Symonds batted slow. He scored 75 in 84 balls. Unlike Dhoni, and Uttahpa he could maintain a strike rate of 100 or above -- and thats the main reason for Aussie loss, especially being bowled out in 47th over. So Australians have only to blame themselves for this loss.

Yes India won the match by 8 runs. India scored 291-4. In reply Australia posted 283-7. You have to give credit where its due, and in this game India gets credit. Australia lead the series 2-1 with 3 more ODI's to go. India won the toss and elected to bat first. I do not know if batting first gives better chance of victory, because that is how it seems in this series.

Yes. India defeated Australia in an ODFI first time after January 2004 and after 5 defeats in ODI against them. India ke[pt their nerve till last, whereas Australia wilted under pressure.
Till 47th over, Australia were fully under control and no one expected India to win. However, in that crucial over r.P. Singh bowled Symonds and ran out Brad Hogg, which put Australia under pressure and they lost the match by 8 runs. It was a creditable performance by India.

Yes India did beat Australia and the simple reason for it is we had wickets in hand at the death overs and Australia did not.
