You either go to New Street to take train to Southampton then change train to Portsmouth which will take about 3 hr 30mins or take megabus which will take almost 6 hours.
Megabus is cheaper but takes longer time. Train is more comfy and expensive but faster.

Your best bet is to go into your local train station at a time when they are quiet / bored and ask. If you look on the website - you won't be able to play around with options as easily. I went to Liverpool from London - and the guy in the station saved me about £20 by splitting it into different routes, using different options - and the journey time was the same as if I had bought the ticket for a whole journey. Too hard to work out savers, super savers over the net!!

Change at Winchester or Southampton, go to the trainline for tickets-or better still go to the train station.
