There is a difference between a delusion and a lie.

A lie is when some one says something and they know it is not true.

A delusion is when a person genuinely believes what he is saying is true but is not.

For example if someone is extremely paranoid they might be deluded into believing that their friends are trying to hurt hurt them.

OK, technically, a delusion is a BELIEF held by a person contrary to reality and despite contrary evidence.
(I believe I am Superman)

A HALLUCINATION is sensory experience despite stimulation from the environment.
(I heard a voice in my head telling me to eat lettuce)

It may be one or the other, depending on whether your friend has a false belief, or a false sensory experience. However, I think it's more of a false memory.

Social psych tells us that we tend to be overconfident about how we recall certain experiences, without necessarily being accurate. Some "memories" have been modified by new experiences or have deteriorated over time, but they may seem so vivid that we think the events actually happened when they didn't. It's normal, and I would advise people to be both tolerant and wary of this.

Example: A delusion-Al Gore created the internet, Hillary will solve all the worlds problems, and Bill "did not have sex with that woman", Obama isn't black, Murtha has morals, and Nancy Pelosi doesn't hire illegals to work her vineyards and hotels....get the point.

The best thing to do is ask the person yourself.
Society hides many incidents. People lie to save face or keep up pretenses. Truth may be weirder than collective non remembrance of an unpalatable truth, and at the end of the day, all you need is to live with your own truth.
