(x^2+y^2)+(-x^2+y^2)
=x^2+y^2-x^2+y^2
=2y^2

x^2 + y^2 - x^2 + y^2 = 2 y^2

Remember that + of - or - of + is -. So the x^2 terms get cancelled.
