Take some chicken wire and lay it over the area where the bulbs are planted and secure it with some landscape staples (these are u shaped pieces of stiff wire) or small stakes. This will deter animals from digging in the area. The wire can be left in place or taken up next spring when the bulbs start growing.

I had a similar problem. I found that sticking little twigs into the ground where you have the bulbs planted creates an obstacle and prevents the cats digging that area. They only need to be a few inches tall and really you'd hardly notice them. It also stops cats digging bare soil to use as a toilet.

Cats only dig to cover up their "doings", and I'd guess you'd know if that was the case. I, too, think it may well be squirrels. You might try to protect the bulbs with wire netting, well pegged in so the crafty little herberts can't pull it out or, for that matter, don't get stuck.

I too have had this problem, pepper and stay away sprays did not work, so a gardener told me to use wooden skewers, just place them in flower bed, the cat will catch themselves and after a few days will stop coming into your garden. It does not hurt them , just gives them a fright.

Another way is to lay netting over the bulbs until the shoots come through.

Are you sure it is the cat? Squirrels are usually the culprit and they LOVE flower bulbs. You should place moth balls (available at any dollar store or walmart ) This is good for spiders too . Good luck

Neal & Cathy is right.
Cover area with chicken wire & weight it down. Cats, dogs, squirrels don't like walking on it and definitely can't dig.
