I'm thinking of studying abroad (Rome), and just trying to plan a bit in advance. I'm open to ideas for certain times of year or any suggestions, really. Thank you much!

Depends where you are from.
It used to be take home the same day service round here, but now it takes a week, very long!
(That is in the Netherlands.)

But in some countries (USA) it can take up to 4 months. (Although the time should soon be reduced to the 8 weeks they claim is the 'normal' time.)

If you want to have a passport in holiday season, either winter-sport time or summer, the times go up, often to double the normal time from normal.

You can go to the post office or call one and ask. My last passport renewal took a few weeks so you might want to get started on it.
