what is the low rocky plateau in Massachusetts and Connecticut?

the system of trap rock ridges in the Conn. river valley really doesn't have a single name they go by a variety of local names mt tom, east rock, west rock etc. by the way there not a plateau but a series of old lava flows that have been tipped on edge. one side has a gentle slope to the top the other a sharp cliff face. very good hiking on the ridges.
