i only have one ethernet port in my modem and im going to connect a router to my modem do i need to ethernet ports on my modem or am i okay?

The router has a network or Internet connection that the cable from the modem plugs into. Common routers today have 4 additional ethernet ports for devices, and some hard wire routers can be found with 8 ports.

The one ethernet port on your modem should be connected to the WAN (Internet) port on the router. Then you would connect the other computers to the router to share the internet connection.....

No it's ok.
I also have one on my modem. The trick might be in the cable linking your modem to you router.
Some router have electronics do deal with that, some others not. check out the doc of your router and see if you need a "cross connect" ethernet cable .

You only need the ONE. This is where you will connect to your Router.
So instead of connecting from the Modem to your computer you connect from your MODEM to your ROUTERS WAN Port.
That's all there is to it read the paperwork that came with the Router, it gives you a step ny step.
