When I connect a second computer wirelessly to my router I lose the connection on my desktop. I have one wired connection which is fine, one laptop ( wireless ) which is fine and a second desktop which, when the other two are connected loses its connection - although it shows he network strength as excellent. Would I be able to run an extension from the phone line to the second desktop and use a second modem to connect to the internet? And if so how? This would basically mean that I would be running two modems off one phone line.

What you need to do is try and reposition your router closer to wireless machines. Even though the strength appears to be good, it sometimes does not work properly.

axely1,
Wireless LAN (WLAN) is made for mobility and simplicity (no more stumble on wires lying around the ground), so you're doing good by using WLAN now than wired LAN.
It'll help more if you mention the vendor of your WLAN Router and WLAN adapters. But anyway, here are the steps you should consider do first before you use wired LAN again:
1.) check you vendor's website for up-to-date firmware and softwares/drivers. Better version means better performance and compability.
2.) go to your wireless adapter's Properties and make all the settings there by default, or if you're confident enough you may change the settings according your wish (it'll take trial and error to see which one is right).
3.) make sure your WLAN Router features DHCP and your WLAN adapter obtain IP & DNS address automatically.

If those steps can't help you out, your last try (before use wired LAN) is to use another WLAN adapter for your PC. Because I know and experienced myself, that there are WLAN adapters that won't work properly even though they're not broken and still new. I had the same problem as you do, the WLAN adapters will disconnect from the WLAN Router by themselves... and then they stay like that forever until I change the WLAN adapter's Properties (disable and then re-enable it again).
Good luck & happy wireless networking!

PS: you could use wired LAN from the WLAN Router to your desktop PC instead of purchasing new modem for itself.

I even have the comparable project as Andrew. I actually have a ZyXEL 336M MIMO router. 2 computers (a million pc with G MIMO PCI adapter and a million computing device) are linked to it via instant. they each so often additionally lose connection even with the undeniable fact that it occurs greater often with the computing device even whilst i exploit it purely next to the router. I actual have a 0.33 computing device linked to the router via cable. As pronounced via some I even have separated the ADSL modem and the router via putting them in distinct areas of the room. whilst i exploit the computing device I word that the Tx velocity often drops from 56Mbs -> 40 two -> 24 -> a million or something like that. once I get to a million it potential there is not any connection. Then it slowly is going returned up returned. i do no longer think of this is the router's fault. i've got not got the different instant equipment in my room besides my cellular telephone. i'm additionally searching for an answer.

No. You can only use one modem on a broadband line.

One respondent suggested an IP conflict - I think this unlikely as it will always be the last computer trying to connect that will be refused a connection. Check that your desktop is set to connect only to an Access Point and not to an ad-hoc network.

No, only one modem can work on a single broadband connection at any one time.

Make sure there is not a IP conflict happening. When all 3 computers are connected to the router they all should have different IP addresses.
