I always here from my friends about how Americans are loud. I'm inclined to agree, especially in black culture (they almost scream to communicate with each other sometimes - I actually find it ..... boisterous, not really negative...though...slightly irratating in confined spaces like on the bus.) Overall all though, white culture included, we are rather loud, aren't we? Why is this?...hmmmm

Have I actually been to Europe, ever? Yes. I'd say about..16 times? The stereotype holds true my friend. I'm not asking if we're loud, but why?

ok, this question wasn't meant to be anti-american. I'm a f*cking American! Wow...crazy man. If you think the statement "americans are louder" is insulting - it's because YOU decided it was insulting. I don't know or claim that it's even a BAD trait, but it IS a trait. This jingoistic crap must end!

people who don't listen don't trust their own ability to be heard, so they say it louder.

I agree that, in general, Americans tend to be louder than in European cultures. In my opinion, the reason is in how our nation was formed. We grew out of people with an independent spirit who were free-thinkers and who, later, learned to enjoy life alot more than the original founding fathers. As a country, we really have a very free spirit and I think that contributes to how LOUDLY we live our lives. Being loud is irritating to other cultures but it's just how we express ourselves. We live with enthusiasm and I don't think that's necessarily a bad trait! :) I will say, when I was traveling through England and Europe, I found other Americans to be quite irritating and sometimes embarrassing. Being loud is one thing....being completely inconsiderate of everyone around you is NOT cool and it's not how I personally want people to think of Americans.

Because we believe in manifest destiny and a lot of other junk that makes us show off even when there is nothing to show.

Europeans are as bad, but usually they are bragging about real things (like all of the money they have never paid back from the Marshall plan after World War II

We are too used to cell phones, which in many cases are unnecessary for your party to hear you even miles away.

I also think it is a subconscious effort to communicate with folks who may not understand the "American" language.

Have you actually been to Europe? Ever?

I know an awful lot of European Immigrants, and they are MUCH louder than any of their American counterparts.
