There are two communities in Cyprus, but the majority are greeks, the civilisation especially ancient ine of the island everywhere is greek, and the greek side is recognised till now..
The greek cypriots have developped so much the island certainly one day they have to live with the minority as they were living before, helping also the turkish cypriots to raise up their economy for a better future of the islands and work together as a entire islandd
But the majority of the elements which compose the island are greeks...
So we can juge..

I can only speak from personal experience.
I spent 3 years on the island with the RAF between 1968 and 1971. i.e. before the island was divided.
At that time both Greek and Turkish speaking Cypriots happily tolerated each other, even if they chose not to socialise. Either group could travel around the island safely.
Today I suggest that most would prefer the old system.
Put simply the bulk of the population of the Island want to be independent of both Athens, and Ankara, (probably London as well), Membership of the EC is the first step in this direction.

The Greek presence on the island is dating back 4000 years..
Greek character has survived from MANY foreign occupations on the island. It has been ruled by the Roman Empire, the Knights Templar, Lusignans, Venice and in 1571 it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire which established for the FIRST time the Turkish presence on the island.. Today 82% of Cypriots are Greek, and 18% are Turkish....Cyprus belongs to Cypriots, not Greeks, not Turks, not Brits...Its an independent country...BUT, the identity of the island is GREEK, 82% of Cypriots are Greeks and we are very proud of it :)

Well since the question is addressed to Greek Cypriots only. I will not give my opinion as a Turkish Cypriot. If you want to hear our side of the story, you can contact me (us).

If you will negotiate for priviliges, remember that you have to give to get. Negotiation based solely on getting will fail. Also, negotation based on truth will overcome one based on propaganda.
