The latter encompasses the former. There is no "difference."
EDIT: To the person directly below: No creativity in pop? Explain Patrick Wolf then. Take a look at the list of instruments he plays. Explain how Neutral Milk Hotel isn't creative. Name ten other bands that have ever used a singing saw without looking it up.
EDIT2: Most of these replies seem to be confusing "pop" with dance, R&B, and/or adult contemporary.

Don't listen to these idiots who are clearly biased. There really is not much difference. MGMT or Green Day could be considered Pop. By Pop though, I guess you mean Radio Electropop. Electropop is basically electronic autotune that sounds reallly bad. Modern Rock uses guitars and tries to imitate Kurt Cobain.

Pop music (or "pop") is a subgenre of contemporary popular music that typically has a dance-along rhythm or beat, simple melodies and a repeating structure. Pop song lyrics are often emotional, commonly relating to love, loss, emotion, or dancing. The term does not refer to a single genre or sound, and its meaning is different depending on the time and place.
Rock music is a form of popular music with a prominent vocal melody accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. Many styles of rock music also use keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or synthesizers. Rock music usually has a strong back beat, and often revolves around guitar, either electric or acoustic.

Rock music has its roots in 1950s-era rock and roll and rockabilly. In the late 1960s, rock music was blended with folk music to create folk rock, blues to create blues rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion, and without a time signature to create psychedelic rock. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and latin music. Also in the 1970s, rock developed a number of subgenres, such as soft rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock. Rock subgenres from the 1980s included synth-rock, hardcore punk and alternative rock. In the 1990s, rock subgenres included grunge-style rock, britpop, indie rock, piano rock, and nu metal.

pop music is of course short for popular music. . Pop music usually has repetitive lyrics and repitive music. In most pop songs if you were to take away the vocals youd hear the same beat repeating the whole song. Pop music is targeted to get on the radio. The biggest common factor in pop music is its strong catchy hooks. Pop music lyrics almost always talk about love, dancing, or a new catchy phrase or dance. Pop music lyrics almost always are about something "radio friendly" . Which means its something almost all people can relate to.
Pop music can be viewed two different ways.
To be more specific
Pop music can be viewed as the type of music Michael jackson created. A very repetive dance happy beat focusing strongly on catchy vocals almost always about love or dancing..
these pop artists dont have bands. The beats are made in a studio and the recording label often tries to market them as a sex symbol or icon. These artists usually have a young teen female based audience.
examples are michael jackson, janet jackson, Backstreet Boys, justin timberlake, Nsync, Britney spears, Christina aguilera, jessica simpson, the spice girls
Secondly pop music can be described as very broad genre simply meaning it has strong enough hooks to capture mainstream radios attention.
For example nickelback is a rock goup but there songs come on pop radio so they would be considered pop but they are indeed a rock band.
you can be pop rock or pop rap .
Alot of people view artists that are on pop radio to be selling out and unoriginal. Pop music also depends on the trend. For instance in the early 90's grunge music was on pop radio. Today that kind of music is not accepted on pop radio. Today rap music is widely accepted on pop radio. 15 years ago it wasnt accepted.
Rock music is a broad type of music that uses guitar bass and drums . Sometimes more instruments are used including the violin keyboard and electronic instruments.
In short Pop music is kind of music that focuses on catchy sing along hooks, michael jackson started or music on mainstream radio or targeted for mainstream radio focusing more on vocals than the actual music.
Rock music is a type of music that is made with guitar, bass, drums and sometimes more instruments.

Pop is an abbreviation for popular, usually indicating something that makes it in the top of the Billboard charts. Not all pop is rock and not all rock is pop. There are plenty of great rock songs that never charted.
