Hey guys and gals, i'd just got my wireless router and did the above to hide my SSID broadcast.

But when i click on my router's status log, it shows that there still people trying to access my router for internet access.

How is this possible? I'm using a D-link DI-524 router. Please advise. Thanks. :)

Even if your SSID is hidden it can be found if people know your SSID name.

If you want to stop people from still connecting the not only hide your SSID, but change the SSID also.

There are many 'network tools' out there that will still pick up the SSID even though the broadcast is turned off. Net Stumbler is a simple little Windoze program that will prove the point.

Your best bet for WiFi security is to use a combination of no SSID broadcast, WPA(2) encryption and MAC address filtering.

This will protect you from all 'script kiddies' and most real hackers wouldn't even bother - they'd just move on to the next house/business.

I have connected to hidden ssids to prove to owners this is not secure. You are better to turn it on, it can cause serious problems if you ever have trouble with one of your machines. The only security that works is encryption, even mac address blocking can be beaten, and again can cause problems later. On an unencrypted network it is possible to read every transmission without connecting and from this your user names and passwords, and even mac addresses can be read. Using mac address spoofing anyone can connect when the filtered machine is off line, and this can stop the filtered machine connecting. Even with encryption you will see attempted connections, this is from any machine trying to get a connection, even if these machines have a connection of their own. This is normal, but your encryption blocks them.

If others had discovered your ssid before you hid it then they will still try to connect. You need to turn on WPA or WEP security to make yourself safe from intruders
