I am sad to hear that people say Stratocasters suck. Perhaps when I get better I will feel it's worth it to spend $500+ on a guitar. I wonder how long it will take me to get to that point - what do you guys think? How long did it take you?

In any case, I live in an apartment, and I am wondering if a 10 or 15 amp practice amp is too loud for where I live. Should I get one of those mini amps that play right from your guitar instead? Please advice.

I want to play my favorite 90's rock songs like Enter Sandman and Semi Charmed Life.

i have to admit small practice amps are crap most of the time...and i have a 10w marshall which is ok but they suck with overdrive unless you crank them...if you do get a practice amp make sure it has a headphone jack and you get some decent headphones

i usually wear ear plugs when i play at home late at night just because i have to turn the amp halfway up to get any decent sound on overdrive and all the way for clean...

line 6 makes a good practice amp with a ton of settings, marshall is a good name but not for practice amps...fender makes a decent practice amp as well...

and starcasters are a piece of crap...im not gonna lie...i played my friends when i broke a string on my sg and didnt have any extra sets lying around...it was horrible coming through my half stack...i say practice and get better then dish out some money for better gear.

The absolute best route to go in this case is an ibanez guitar with a line6 spider 2 or 3 combo amp (since he's just a beginner, something along the lines of 15 watts). Ibanez makes fantastic guitars for amazing prices. I've never been disappointed by one. Line6 isn't the best way to go if you're getting professional gear, but if you're just practicing in your room, it pulls off decent distortion and nice little effects. Go to your local guitar center, ask for a Ibanez GRX20Z and the cheapest line6 spider series amp you can get. Just make sure you have about a $250-300 budget. He should be fine on picks and cables if he already plays.

I'd get a small 15-watt practice amp that has a headphone jack in it.

Sometimes you just want to play loud and a smaller amp won't let you do that. 15-watt is loud enough to cut through another instrument if you have a friend you want to jam with eventually and will get loud enough to cover up your string noise.

The headphone jack will let you practice at night when your neighbors will complain. You can also run your amp into your computer with the headphone jack and play over your computer speakers. The small computer speakers push less air than the amp's main speaker so you can play without headphones and the neighbors won't hear it. Bass is what really travels through walls easily.

Hang in there kid... If you practice you'll find that the better you get the better you'll want. You have to start from somewhere.. Try an amp my guitar player had-- It is called a pig nose. They are small and have the capabilities to make distortion without the 1000 watt Marshall volume! I'm almost certain they have a head phone jack in them too. So try a pig nose. Maybe you can find one on eBay.. Good Luck and keep on pickin!!!
