You might have to adjust the language settings.

Make sure it is on EN for English.

If it isn't a hardware problem, more likely a defective keyboard rather than one previously mentioned, I had a similar software problem with u and e in wordpad when I turned my computer on, but I found that I could reboot and the problem was gone. That was an operating system error that had developed, possibly from shutting down and restarting without closing Windows first, as is done when a power outage occurs or a lightning strike. If that's your problem, you will need to re-install Windows to actually fix it.

Hi,
I share your amusement and bemusement with the "io" problem.

At work once, I dived into the "keyboard mapping" facility on a collegues machine, and swapped the i and the o.

Much amusement as he dod nit have a nitoin as to the priblem.

On a pc, you could just gently prise off the naughty keys, and swap them over.

Delve into said keyboard mapper, and you can assign any character or function to any key.
A state of total confusion.

Why your Dell has decided to re-map is a mystery, unless someone has done the old trick as described above.

All the best with it

Bob

Do you mean you get an "o" as well as an "i"? That sounds mechanical rather than anything to do with mapping. I'd guess there's something sticky in your keyboard, causing one key to drag the other with it. A little cleaning is required.

If, however, the two letters are transposed and you always get an "o" instead of "i" and vice versa, well it could be that someone has kindly swapped the keys around - are they in the correct sequence of u,i,o,p?

If neither applies, could be you're in for some remapping as already suggested.

Maybe someone has taken the I and O keycaps off and swapped them (if you're a hunt and peek typist you would be fooled by that little trick).

Replace your keyboard. Or open it up and clean the plastic matrix pad with alchol.
