Escapism is a possibility. Perhaps many people are afraid to ask for help "in real life." Some people who are depressed come here to get a variety of perspectives; reassurance; ideas; to help others because sometimes it's easier than helping yourself. The feeling you get when you make someone smile, or when you help someone solve a problem is one of the most rewarding gifts in life! It makes you feel useful.

I don't think everyone on line is depressed, it is sort of fun if you do it as enternanment.I am in Europe and have alot of free time at the moment and like to get on line for an hour or so and relax, see what others are thinking ect.
I am heading back to the states this week and back to work so i may not have the time to answer questions for awhile.

Are you depressed? If your not and I'm not and all the people that answered your Q aren't, not everyone is depressed. Their just bored. It's 1:30 in the morning, i can't go to sleep, i'm bored, i'm a prime example that not EVERYONE is "depressed" that go online. Maybe alot of people are.

When you sit around, hunched over a computer, you start to get stiff then back pain. You get pasty skin from not being in the sun. All this leads to depression. It could be lack of vitamen D or lack of social contact. The on-line rudeness doesn't help, either.

Because depressed people probably have nothing better to do but be online on sites like this. Non-depressed types are out having fun, going on dates, making millions, etc.

I don't get that either. All of the things that a person can do, think, dream, see, hear, feel, touch, walk to and from, and all they want to do is be depressed. Depressed for what? if a person cannot find a reason to stay happy then misery is what they deserve.
