Long before humans discovered the earth was flat it was written in the bible.
Hebrew prophet Isaiah, of the eighth century B.C.E., indicated that the earth was spherical. He wrote: “There is One [God] who is dwelling above the circle of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers.” (Isa. 40:22) The Hebrew word here rendered “circle” also may be translated “sphere.” (A Concordance of the Hebrew and Chaldee Scriptures, by B. Davidson)

Well, the ancient Greeks knew the world was round, as it can be demonstrated in several ways. The shadow of the earth on the moon during a lunar eclipse is always round, travel on land or sea (the Greeks were great sailors) show some stars disappear to the north or south while others appear as you move, ships obviously move below the curve of the earth as they sail away.
Aristarchus of Samos was the first to suggest that the earth orbitted the sun.
Columbus actually DIDN'T prove the world was round, nor was he a true believer in a wilderness of ignorance. He actually had the wrong size for the earth and everyone else had the right size. He just got lucky that something was between Europe and Asia to the west.

not Columbus, it is a myth that everyone thought the world was flat. the Greeks were one of the first. Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth to within about 7% error. That was in the 3rd century, BC
