There is a black and white movie called The Haunting; it sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it! It starred Claire Bloom and Julie Harris. Pure mental fear... Fantastic. (1960's)
Another great scary movie is Salems Lot with David Soul and James Mason; based on a Stephen King novel and is a great 'Nosferatu' vampire movie. Terrified me when I watched at the age of 12! Still scares me now at 36! (1975)
So many horror fims today are gory more then frightening!
Alien was on tonight in the UK and that still scares me!

I remember watching Salem's Lot when I was a child on the tv back in the seventies.
The scene after the funeral of the young brother floating outside of the window and tapping on it scared the shites out of me as a nine ten year old.
Funny thing is to this day I can't watch that scene it still gives me the creeps lol And that's at 39. hehehe

There was a film or drama many years ago of Bram Stokers Dracula with Frank Langella in the title role, it was very scary indeed. I would like to see it again though, to see if was as good/scary as i remember.

Mothman prophecies was one of the freakiest movies I've seen and that was only becuz it was based off actual events. The actual events scary movies freak me a little whereas fake/made up movies r not freaky at all.
