I received a sample ballot for a special election yesterday. The election is for school board members and local community college board members.

I normally try to vote in every election, but I'm not sure about this one. I don't have kids in the school district, I don't attend the community college, I don't know anything about any of the people running for office, and I don't know anything about the issues at stake. Also, I don't know how much longer I will be living in the community.

In this situation would you still get out and vote?

If I couldn't find anything in the paper that would give me a clue as to what the candidates stood for or their qualifications, I would say that this election would be one to skip. If you are completely in the dark, you would be voting solely by random or by name, neither of which is likely to contribute to the best people getting the job.

Normally, there is at least something about the election in the community paper though.

Your property taxes, gas taxes, sales taxes and income tax is used to fund schools.
You got a dog in the fight to oversee how your taxes are spent
Even if what they are spent on is a service you never use,
Like welfare
Research the electors and the issues and become informed
and always make the informed vote. Don't be basing it on Race or Sex either. Base on your views. Vote the person not the persons race or sex.

I don't vote when it's a situation such as you describe unless I'm willing to spend the time to learn about the positions and people (and when it's something that doesn't concern me or my family in any way, I'm not willing to spend that time). I don't like to vote from ignorance.
