because pink is giiiirly! :p
hehe j/k...
i think it's all arbitrary, actually. somebody somewhere some time long long ago figured pink looked really good on his/her daughter or self and for some reason or other a bunch of people followed suit.
so now everybody pretty much everywhere learns, as one of the first social rules of this world, that pink corresponds to girls and blue to boys.
it could very well have turned out the other way around, i think. or, it could've been burgundy and fuschia... tho not likely. maybe orange and yellow, or red and green.
i do doubt, tho, that all cultures in the world equate pink to girls and blue to boys. i just wouldn't buy it.
in fact, that'd be a kewl study. find a remote culture that's disconnected from the rest of the world and see if they'd assign a pink shirt to a boy or girl.
that, or round up a bunch of newborns and give 'em the choice between a pink toy and a blue toy... and the results would probly be about even.
my $.02 :)

Why is red associated with stop and green with go? Or blue with cold? Or black with bad and white with good? If you know the answer to these, then maybe we can know why pink is associated with femininity. My theory on it is that pink is a very floral colour in nature.

It's an old custom which actually goes back 3,000 years to the ancient Sumerians and Baylonians who lived in what is now Iraq. Through cultural diffusion the custom eventually made its way to Greece and Rome and the rest of Europe too.

Oooo I just learned about that in my psych class... something about the folklore that the color blue would protect a baby boy from something (evil spirits? can't remember).
