Make life better for people?

Dear All,

What a programmer can do to make life better for people?
It is like what a doctor named Patch Adam did or like doctors who founded Doctors Without Borders did. They are doctors and they use their skills to make people's life better. What a programmer can do the same?

Help out in a charity organization. The one I volunteer for needs help from software people because of all the accounting they have to do, e.g. statistics and data base.
