You seriously have mental issues. What is the fun in having a car that can't go over 100mph? Some places have no speed limit because there are hardly any travlers..so that makes it easier for them to travel faster and not worry about time issues. You think everyone is gonna run from the police? The max speed on most cars reads 120 - 160. But governers kick in so that limits off their speed. How many cars have you seen run from the police and got away?...slim to zero. They have helicopters..strips..etc etc to catch the suspect. You never see cars that can hit 200mph run from the police. So therefore why should it be a need to limit to 100mph? Also we need cars that can go over 100mph for safety issue. Don't believe me on this one? Take a car that is limited to 100mph and drive on the freeway in Sacramento, California, you'll see why speed is important. Don't believe me?...try it. Also no one would run from a police unless they commited a serious crime or is holding alot of 'hot' illegal items on them, and most of the time these people get caught. People who gets pulled over for minor things never run from the police.

absurd. 100mph is a decent speed for low traffic interstate travel. Most accidents are because people don't understand the performance LIMITS on their vehicles. In Germany, to even be insurable, a car model has to be able to flip over at 100mph and not have the roof cave in. This is why german cars often are drivable after a crash. They are built like tanks. 100mph is really fairly slow considering what speeds are actually possible. My friend cruises on his gsxr 1000 at about 160mph and has no problem getting up in the 190s. I think the speed limit should be changed based on traffic and if there is a certain watermark number of car volume keep it lower like 70mph, and if there is no cars at all, there is no limit.

speed has nothing to do with car crashes.
it is running into things that caused the crash.
grqanted, the faster you go the harder you hit, but with the ludicrously easy licencing systems in place today, a lego man on dope could get a licence (my 9 year old daughter tried an online licence test for a car and failed, by only 1 mark). until goverments get real and toughen up licencing for drivers, speed limit arguments and pointless and a waste of breath

Better question:
Why do we not actually teach people how to drive? Most of the idiocy that I see has nothing to do with speed. The current vogue of 'video-game' driving style convinces these geniuses that they 'can' drive fast and maintain control of the vehicle, when they really, really, have no clue of even the basics of vehicle operation.
Most Police-involved car chases are started by criminal acts, usually drug possession or car theft...I don't know about the druggies, but 'Drive it like you stole it' has real meaning in the criminal world!

Most cars are made with an electronic governor that limits their speed, but this is more to keep you from destroying the car while on warranty.

Because people like speed, and won't buy a product that's limited to 100 mph, and companies are motivated to make products that meet consumers' desires.

it has nothing to do with out running the police...its a safety matter. legislators and auto manufacturers both figure that no one needs to be traveling that fast...

Why bother? You can't outrun a police radio.
Or a spike strip.
