When you change the water, you shouldn't change more than about 25% and it should be dechlorinated and the same temperature that he's in. He should have a heater and a filter and at least 5 gallons of water. Bettas are sensitive and if you don't care for them properly, they get sick and die. You may be able to save yours, but if you haven't given him the proper conditions, he is weak and may not make it. I hope he does! Good luck!

Your fish might have chlorine poisoning, however, it's important for you to check if the lower half of his bodys scales are sticking up. To see the scales, look at the fish from above, if teh scales look funny, it probably has the same thing I lost my last betta to a couple days ago. Also, does the water have a clearish mucus in it?

Unfortunately your bettas behavious is probably due to temprature shock and cholrine poisoning, but I can't say for sure, as I don't quite know myself.

I hope your fishie doesn't die!

IF your fish survives, change teh water every two or three days, and have it at room temp ( takes about 3 hours ) and only change about a quarter of it. I suggest you use Aquarisol ( about a drop per gallon ) or a teaspoon of Aquarium salt per every 2 1/2 gallons. Try getting Java Moss, too, it removes plenty of harmful chemicals and toxins from your fishes water.

So, your dad cleaned the tank with cold water, with the fish still in it?

I'd say he's suffering from either chlorine/chloramine poisoning-add some dechlorinator to the tank if you haven't already(assuming you're on city water).

It also could be temperature shock, rapid changes in the temperature whether up or down will stress them. Or, it could also be ph shock if the ph is different then it was before the water change.

For the fish laying down on the rocks, was that before the water changes? That's usually a sign of ammonia poisoning. But could also be from the other reasons I listed above. If it was before the water changes, you should increase the amount of water changes you're doing, depending on the tank size. And be sure the new water you add is very close to his tank water temperature. Any large water changes that you do, be sure to let him adjust slowly to the new tank water.
