It's not a great year for foliage. It's been very dry since July and a lot of leafs are turning ugly brown and just falling off.

Columbus day weekend (this weekend) is the historical peak for color north of Boston. I went up to Lake Winnipesaukee on Saturday and there was very little color. Very few tree's have turned.

You might luck out and catch some color. I'd suggest hiring a limo to take you around. Maybe take the commuter rail out of south station to Providence or Middleborough?

DoH does not know what he is talking about. I just went from Boston to Montreal 2 days ago and the colors are brilliant.

However, unfortunately you simply will not be able to see anything without a car. All of the lovely areas are rural with little or no public transportation (and definitely not any that will stop to let you take pictures).

And it is true that by the end of October most of foliage season is over, except for a little remaining in extreme southeastern CT. Sorry.

By the end of October, the peak foliage season will likely have past -- especially in Boston and to the north and west. Your best bet may be to travel south to Rhode Island.

Nah, Rhode Island is the same. The leaves have color now and many are starting to fall. By end of October, it'll look like winter.
