Now back in the olden days, where there were many fatalities in childbirth, I could respect women for their strength to survive childbirth.

But nowadays, you women are in hospitals with all kinds of pain-killing medicine. You could even have a C-section if the baby's too big, which is painfree because they numb the nerves. Modern women are wimps compared to the mothers of old.

I didn't say modern childbirth was painfree. I said "virtually" painfree. Of course, there is some minor discomfort involved, but it's not painful.

I plan on having all my children the old fashion way (though if I absolutely have to -like on doctors orders- I would have C-section). For a couple reasons A) I am terrified of needles, so there is no way they can give me pain medication (and I can't swallow pills) B) I'd like to hold my baby after its born (no C-section) and C) I am hopelessly old fashion, so anything less just wouldn't work for me.

That's a crock. Cesaerian sections are major surgery and require six weeks to recover. Childbirth is also a major procedure and requires recovery time. C-sections are supposed to only be done when there are problems such as breech births, umbilical cord problems, etc. Any procedure that requires anathetic can be dangerous. Scars from c-sections or episiotomy scars from natural childbirth can take a long time to heal, are disfiguring, and episiotomy scars can remain painful for a long time. Not all women choose to have an epidural to reduce pain during natural childbirth. Sometimes the baby comes too quickly or too slowly and there is not time for the injection or it wears off. Babies and mothers still die in childbirth and c-sections in modern hospitals to this very day, so the procedure hasn't been protected.
Futhermore in most of the world many women have no choice but to have a natural birth in a non-clinical setting.
Finally even if there's a perfect natural birth with an epidural and no episiotomy, and no bleeding, the birth may not be pain free, because breastfeeding is often painful at first.

First of all, you don't get to choose a c-section, because they put mother at higher risk for hemorrhaging, anesthetic complications, bacterial infections, blood clots, even heart and lung complications and they put baby at risk for fetal injury and breathing problems.

Second, I had to have a c-section halfway through my labor. They usually don't put you to sleep, genius. The doctors insert a looong needle into your spine and numb you from the waist down. Then they cut you open, remove the baby and close you up. It's not so bad until the anesthesia wears off and then you feel like you've been hit by a truck.

In my case, the incision opened a week later and had to be reclosed, but the area became infected and my husband had to stuff gauze into the wound for a month. It was not a pretty sight, not to mention that it was quite painful.

I also had a medication free vaginal birth a few years ago, because I didn't want my baby to be drugged at birth. Now I would recommend that women at least go for the epidural, so they can enjoy the experience instead of suffering more than necessary. You respected women for their strength to endure the pain of childbirth? As irrelevant as that is, I agree with the suggestion that you go have surgery without medication and get back to us on how brave you were.

What is it with you nosey, hateful guys on this board though? Seriously , you want to know what it feels like? It's like pushing a watermelon out of your behind. I guess you could dull the pain with medication, but how do you think you're going to feel afterwards?

Idiot.

Hmmmm.... i don't think the experts outweigh the cons. If that have been authentic, we would be doing extra clever, not getting gradually worse. do away with the television and different issues that take in all some time and interest. do not purchase processed meals. purely purchase bio-degradable products. remember there's a actual worldwide obtainable and circulate to it frequently. those are issues all of us have administration of and can concentration on. scientific analyze has saved lives... according to threat this is authentic, yet what many don't comprehend is what proportion lives it has taken besides. Mass distribution of foodstuff... is it somewhat foodstuff and healthful for you? via the time you eat a million/2 that crap, you will prefer that stunning scientific analyze. Mass production cheapens a product. you have possibilities, what you do with them is your guy or woman determination. exchange what you are able to. all of it makes a distinction. worldwide village... can we learn that to places like Yahoo? How approximately each and all of the crap you notice on the information superhighway? I certainly have by no potential seen plenty grime, hatred, prejudice, and so on... as I certainly have seen on the information superhighway. I now not use the information superhighway almost as much as i exploit to. we don't could use countless the well-known technologies attainable... we % to. It makes us lazier in many techniques... bodily and mentally... even emotionally. What people do... plenty would nicely be undone, yet too many like "convenience". Why plant a backyard while the keep has foodstuff? Why walk to the economic employer once you're laptop will enable all transactions on line? Why meet your actual friends while the information superhighway is finished of people? Why eat healthful and cook dinner nutritional food while there are speedy foodstuff joints on each and every block? Why could we exercising while there's a reliable action picture on the television or a pastime to be performed? Why do something we certainly do not could?

What's the question again?

Should modern women forgo pain medication so as not to be "wimps"?

I'm sure the mothers of old would have taken the pain meds if they were available. It was common practice to put the mother out cold with general anesthesia before the 1970's. I also think the C section has been around for a long time.

"mild discomfort involved but it's not painful.." Let me ask you this: how the heck would YOU know? Have you ever given birth? Before you make such statements, maybe you ought to listen to the women who have given birth! "Modern women are wimps compared to mothers of old?" That's ridiculous. Once upon a time we didn't have penicillin, either, but those who died from certain diseases would have really appreciated an antibiotic if it had existed, don't you think? Is it wrong to want to minimize pain if you can? No birth is pain-free. If women prefer natural childbirth, fine, but I'm guessing if pain relief had been available "way back when", women would have accessed it just as much then as they do now.

lol. It is not pain free at all. And unless you had a personal experience in this ( which you as a male could not ) stop making yourself look like an ignorant ***. There are still some fatalities at childbirth all over the world ( hospitals are not as officiant as they seem to someone as uninformed as yourself ). There are also common complications with administration of epidural: when woman feels everything during birth and can't walk or sit for weeks after. There are also pretty common infections after C-section surgeries. Childbearing is not as simple and as fun, as it seems to you. Mothers are still the bravest heroes in the world. Time and evolution did not make our job easier. Hell, it didn't even change your own outlook on life after all these centuries...

have you given birth?

even with medicine, labor is a long, hard, and painful process. not to mention the fact that women still die in childbirth even if it isn't as frequent as earlier years.

also, c-sections are not painless or mildly uncomfortable. they hurt, especially afterwards. you are sore, achy, tired because you have a tiny infant that never sleeps and some women get infections. i had a vaginal birth and had lots of stitches. i was sore for weeks. i had to walk slowly and carefully for at least two weeks; it hurt to sit certain ways and you can only imagine what it felt like to go potty. how would you feel with twenty stitches in your hoo-hoo and no time to rest?

so, quit foaming at the mouth about things you obviously know nothing about.

You're wrong about US fatalities in childbirth, they're going up, and probably due to technology (Complications from C-Sections): US Childbirth deaths on the rise:

And you're wrong about women world-wide: many don't have access to any technology. Pregnancy and childbirth complications are still one of the primary causes of death for women world-wide.

In 2003, African women were 175 times more likely to die in childbirth and pregnancy than Westerners, a UN report says.
Overall, African woman had a one in 16 chance of dying in childbirth and pregnancy

Just how many kids have you had, that were virtually painfree?

2007-10-07 18:56:49 · answer #9 · answered by edith clarke 7 · 5 1

Its painfree until recovery starts. just because you may not feel the pain of the actual birth does not remove the fact that a c-section is seriously invasive surgery, and that pregnancy and birth are an extreme strain on your body. pain killers cannot remove that.

try giving birth, then come back with an opinion.
