Absolutely. For one, he started the news bit that has been part of SNL ever since.
Secondly, see "Foul Play" and one of the movies that followed with Goldie Hawn and Charles Grodin (who you would also be surprised to find out was a funny straight man before he became an annoyingly pretentious political commentator).

I think he did a wonderful job in "Foul Play", which also stars Goldie Hawn, Burgess Meredith, and a remarkable cast of supporting actors. This one brought Dudley Moore to the attention of American audiences.
"Seems Like Old Times" also is a clever film with low-key comic performances by Goldie Hawn (again) and Charles Grodin, an actor I don't usually like but did in this role.
I think he does a wonderful job in "National Lampoon's Vacation" though I'm not as fond of the sequels. Still, he did an excellent job of countering Beverly D'Angelo's more grounded performance with his daffy "Everything's gonna be all right!" approach.
I'm not an SNL person, so I can't refer to his work there. I saw some of the shows from the start and never bothered after that. But, I can go by the films I've seen him in; sadly, when he was at the height of his popularity, they pushed him into an awful lot of projects, most of which were barely amusing or simply not funny. But, that happens to a lot of comedic actors; look what they've done with Owen Wilson~kept him very busy but mostly in awful properties.

Very much so....but.... Like the old saying goes; everyone has their own comedian. I've had tears in my eyes seeing his skits on SNL. He used to do a lot of prat-falls etc. I wonder if you feel the same about Chevy, as I did Jim Carey.sp.just didn't get it till I saw me myself and Irene!! Robin Williams is another one that's so over the top that it seems he tries to cram so much into so little time and to me less is more. Dennis Miller too has a way of over mashing his point.... but I still think he's good.

Chevy Chase was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live back in the day when SNL was a must see event every weekend. His dry wit and popularity gave Chevy the chance to star on the big screen. "Caddyshack" or "Fletch" didn't make you laugh? His humor was intentionally understated and slapstick. Thanks for the memories Chevy!

i think of will ferrell is funnier than chevy chase. he grow to be super in stuff like caddyshack and 3 amigos yet i only got here across him somewhat uninteresting. i think of steve martin did his form of comedy greater valuable, character comedy. will ferrell is so off the wall and his improvisation is so reliable it only cracks me up. its so absurd it shouldnt artwork yet i fall apart every time he seems on visual exhibit unit
