I doubt that I've found anything like you're asking about. For example, in "The Mighty", the boy is chronically ill, while the boy he befriends has a sad and violent past but is won over by the first boy's love of life. So, it's not the cancer situation.

There's "Autumn in New York" (2000).

An older man falls in love with a younger woman who is terminally ill.

"Sweet November" (2001) is another one:

This story of a dying young woman (cancer) who lives life to the fullest and tries to help various men with their troubles was filmed previously~in 1968.

Here's a synopsis of "The Cure" from IMBD:
Dexter, age 11, who has AIDS, and his next door neighbor Eric, a little older and much bigger, become best friends. Eric also becomes closer to Dexter's mother than to his own, who is neglectful and bigoted and violently forbids their friendship upon learning of it. When they read that a doctor in distant New Orleans claims to have found a cure for AIDS, the boys leave home on their own, planning to float down the Mississippi river and find him.

Brian's Song (1971 and 2001~It was made twice, but the first is best!)
Sunshine (1973 TV movie)
She Lives! (1973 TV movie)
Simon Birch (1998)
Steel Magnolias (1989)

Most of these have a situation in which one of the lead characters is dying and one or more of the other main players is there to offer support and guidance even while facing a harsh life or difficult personal situations.

The only movie I can recall like that is Dying Young. After she discovers that her boyfriend has betrayed her, Hilary O'Neil (Julia Roberts) is looking for a new start and a new job. She begins to work as a private nurse for a young man suffering from blood cancer (Leukemia). Slowly, they fall in love, but they always know their love cannot last because he is destined to die. I remember the character who was dieing had a zest for life and had a great impact on Hilary Oneal's life.
