Yeah, it's a fine line and it's also influenced pretty heavily by culture and by one's own perception. (There are beliefs in other cultures that would easily be called "insane" but are believed by the majority of people in that culture - even in this country, psychiatrists are not supposed to give psych diagnoses if this is the case.) Haitians (many of them)believe
that some people turn into cats at nights. In Africa, shamans are among the most respected people in the village. In fact, while I was orienting a new psych tech recently from Kenya, he surprised me by saying, "How do you tell the difference between a normal person who sees and hears things and the patients here who hallucinate?" I said something like, "Well, I guess if it's not causing a problem for him or for anyone else, it's okay. And I guess, if it's improving your social status - like the shamans, why complain?"
Mental health is on a long continuum with the very resilient, flexible, able to swing and sway with like tide of life at one end. and the "total lack of reality testing" at the other; most of us are somewhere in-between. How you use your mind is a combination of genetics and past experience leading to your current perceptions of right/wrong.

Insane makes crazy, sometimes irrational but can also carry intelligence with some. Insane is also known for the person not capable or knowing of whats going on. Living in their own mad world. This is where the intelligence may appear with some.
Sane makes "normal" living capable, aware of whats going on.
Taking life for the time being. Understands what this life is made for.

Firstly, Hitler's mind wasn't evil/insane by what he was trying to achieve, he was a dictator and that is what he believed and was trained to believe and do and his regime was too. Whether we agree or not should not be the judge on sane and insane. I would think insane is thinking that is derived from something that is not there or is unreal/imaginary if you will. I can make a sane decision to do something and follow through with it and other people not agree with my decision but it does not make me crazy. It makes me different than the other people. (This is not a stance for any dictators, past or present (the US dictator).

a hair-thin line. It is a matter of opinion! I was watching a special earlier tonight on MSNBC about Charles Manson, I think he is disgusting but after watching his many interviews I am sure some would argue that he is a genius in his own right. Very interesting topic

The terms, "sane" and "insane" are legal terms, not medical terms! Mental illnesses, which include the various personality disorders, are the correct medical terms. Some of these are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. There are also various degrees of mental deficiency - some of these are congenital (i.e., birth defects), or due to physical injuries.

Sane are those who live according to the society .... 'In'sane are those who live according to their will and desire ....
the way they live .... is a different story ..... they just live in their own 'In' side world .... and try to make it happen in the out side world ....
so according to me both adolf hitler and albert enistine both were 'In'sane ..... they both were able to think in a very uncommon manner .... the usual way .....

One chose to use his brilliant mind to do good and give more to the world. The other chose to use his mind for his own gain at the expense of millions of innocent people.

umm dumbass. the differnce between sane and insane is me and you. i am a sane person and you are an insane dumbass who can't remember albert instines first freakin name.
love ya kar
and technachley albert instine did use his brain to help kill thousands of people. they used his idea for the a-bomb and he gave FDR permission to use it.
but he is one of our heros because the a-bomb was used in a time of need and it helped the americans win the war, but think of how japan probably feels about him and all the other people who helped build it.
