I believe it is necessary to let your children know that their parents are caring, well-adjusted people who they can come to when they have questions. Don't you?

Absolutely, but have your facts straight first.
My mom was always very sraightforward in answering my questions, but she waited until I was 14, which was too late, as I'd already started having sex (which I regret to this day). Fortunately, we student girls in 5th and 6th grades had already had the basics of menstuation and how pregnancy can occur, but weren't taught about birth control. I practiced some pretty high-risk behaviors in an attempt to prevent pregnancy, and was fortunate to never catch an STD (this was in the days before HIV and rampant herpes and chlamydia infections).
Finally, in college I took human sexuality and learned everything all over again.
Just stick to the facts, and your child will be OK. If you are uncomfortable, get over it. Your kid has a right to know.
I talked to my son when he was 11.

it is probably a good idea, but i dont think its neccessary, i mean by the time my parents wanted to talk to me, i was only like 12 and already knew everything i needed to know, and DID NOT want to hear it from my parents ( dont worry i didnt know from personal experience haha). they start teaching about it in school during the elementary years. its not brain surgery. i dont know about anyone else, but i am reallllly glad that my parents never had the full fledged "talk" with me. they would have been telling me stuff i already knew, and it just would have been awkward and uncomfortable. i never in my life had a question about that kind of stuff that i wanted answered by my parents. so guess if you dont think its a big deal then go ahead and do it, but i honestly dont think it makes a big difference, it didnt for me anyway

in todays society, that becomes a grey issue. I first learned about my femine differences in 5th grade, and then wondered more about this. the question is, is your son/daughters health class covering what you wish your children to know, and are you alright with the fact, that without this talk, your children may never talk to you about how they feel/act on this matter.

I think it is and that every parent should do it at one point, but if you don't want to have that talk you don't have to. Neither one of my parents had it with me, but when i was in 7th grade we learned all about it in Health class. But is better to hear it from someone you already know, than from a teacher who's a total stranger to you.

Only if you want them to be informed and to know your values on the subject. Otherwise, you can pass the responsibility off on the schools and keep your uptight personality type intact. The choice is up to you.

Well if you dont do it then someone else will. And that someone else will probably be their peers. And we all know what happens when naive children get together and start talking about sex. Go talk to your kids now!! lol

Is it necessary to teach them to walk? To talk about why we pay for groceries? If you expect your children to have sex at some point in their lives, isn't it better for them to understand it?

theyre going to find out in some way or another. wouldnt you rather them learn from you other than some random person who might give them false info?

I think so because if i didn't get that talk from my parents, I probably would have made a BIG mistake.
