I lean toward getting rid of the U.N. all together, and never trying anything like it ever again. The U.N. Sex with children for food program, the fact that China is on the Human rights board, and now news that in retaliation for rebel attacks on peacekeepers an entire town was destroyed, rather the people in them were killed or not doesn't matter. What do you think? do you think the U.N. is better than the press it is given? Do you think it should be respected or hated?

Both. It serves to level the playing field among nations (or is supposed to when nations actually follow what they have signed up to follow, unlike the united states), and yes it also isn't good because it seeks to make a one world government, which is always a bad idea.

Do away with it I say, but still have an independant world court that can try anyone in any country on war crimes if they commit them.

All the usual slamming of the UN from people who do not seem to understand it is a great deal more than the security council.
For instance the eradication of small pox, the immunisation of nearly 1 billion children for other diseases, the provision of clean drinking water to 1 billion people, the coordination relocation of 15 million refugees at any one time, the establishment of universal protocols and laws with respect to the definition of human rights, internet usage, maritime law, and international mail.
All these things, according to some answers here, were worthless.

The U.N. is a nice idea that can never work. The theoretical idea that a world organization can be developed to end war, hunger, slavery, persecution, etc. is just that - theoretical.

We should stop wasting money on the U.N. and use those funds to actually do something worthwhile like pay down our national debt.

Oh come on now. The U.N. just finished up their rough draft letter to send to Saddam telling him how angry they are with his failure to cooperate. Next week they're going to form a sub committee to investigate the plausibility of considering to associate the letter with a stance by voting in a group of experts to reconcile the sublties of the letter and form a think tank to decide whether or not they should mail it.

It was a good idea that went off in it's own direction and became corrupted. It is probably to late to fix but it is better than nothing. They do get something done right every decade or so. Peace
