A thesis statement is a direct and concise sentence stating what you intend to prove/ talk about in your paper.

par example

If i were trying to prove how much cats rocked more than dogs I might say

Cats are cleary better than dogs because they not only require less attention, but are interesting to watch.

of course, not as simple as that....

A thesis statement is the stating of a hypothesis that you have arrived at - something that no one else has yet discovered. Once you have your hypothesis, you do a ton of research in related areas to ensure that no one else has yet published information about your hypothesis, then you do whatever experimentation, polling, surveys, studies etc. are required, and then you write your thesis.
Most theses run to about a hundred or so pages.

What you are writing about romeo and Juliet and shakespear is an essay or a report, or an analysis, but it isn't thesis. So you don't need a thesis statement (which is a summation of your hypothesis) but rather a topic sentence or an introductory sentence.

In fact, shakespear doesn't use poetry to say that they instantly and mutually fall in love. All of Shakespears plays were written in poetry, so he wasn't doing anything unusual when he used poetry in Romeo and Juliet. The whole play was written in poetry.....

I'm guessing that this is for a high school paper, so here's what a high school definition would be, the way that I learned it a few years ago...

It's basically your main argument in an essay. A thesis statement is usually one sentence, but it can also be two sentences. It generally goes at the end of your first paragraph. A thesis statement should argue something, without being too broad or too narrow, given your topic and the length of your paper.

I'm not that great of a writer, but based on what you've said, a thesis statement in your case could be something along of the lines of: "Shakespeare demonstrates how Romeo and Juliet fall in love through the usage of poetry because..." and describe your arguments.

Good luck with your paper!

What is a thesis statement?
A thesis statement:

tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel that others might dispute.
is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.
If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively.

A thesis statement is merely a sentence or two telling the reader what you hope to prove in the paper you wrote. It is usually in the first paragraph of the paper, but not necessarily the very first sentence.
The body of the paper is where you submit your evidence or proof that this is what happened (did Shakespeare succeed in his theory about poetry and love??)
The conclusion tells your feelings on whether or not Shakespeare succeeded.
Be sure to cite your sources or where your information came from.

" ...My teacher commented on the last sentence and said " ... and his expose of 'smokescreen' adds to his bigger purpose (abolition), how? I'm not sure if he's saying the last sentence is stupid or if he just wants more detail. Assuming he does want me detail can anyone help me out? Any advice or help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Paper is due in the morning and it's to late to email me teacher with the question. Thanks! 5 stars to the best h....... " The smokescreen here indicates that under the shield of religion, the cruel and barbaric treatment of slaves has been considered as rightful act. this needs to be condemned and abolished. similar case exists in Hindu society, in India. where one section of the society is called " untouchables" and they are discarded and maltreated, worse than animals.
