Times Roman or a similar font with feet (serifs) on the letters because it has porven to be the easiest to read. Usually, the same newspaper will use san-serif (without feet) fonts for headlines and subheads for contrast.

Newspaper Font

It varies from paper to paper.

Body type -- the face used for stories -- is almost always a Roman face in English-speaking countries, while European publications are much more likely to use sans serif. Readability of serif vs. sans serif seems to be mostly a matter of what you become used to as a youngster.

Times New Roman actually is Microsoft's TrueType version of the older Times Roman developed for use in newspapers. Another commonly used body text is Bureau Roman.

In headlines, popular fonts for many years include the many variations of Bodoni, Helvetica and Futura. Many others are used as well.

You will not find fonts such as Courier, which are monospace fonts in which all of the characters, regardless of width, take up the same space, so a W gets the same space as an i. Such fonts are a relic of typewriters and impact printers from the early years of the computer era. A designer might use it to achieve an old-fashioned typewritten look, but only as a special effect, never as routine body text.
