It's not directly a true story meaning There was no Tevye and Golde with their family of daughters, but they represent any Jewish family living in Russia in that period. It's true in the sense that the Jews were in fact forced from Russia and many did live with the traditions depicted in the story.

I don't think it was like directly about a specific family. But the things that happened in it happened to someone. It was kind of representing many towns that, that happened to.
