Being an atheist would depress me too! You need professional help. You may be suffering from bi-polar disorder, hypo-mania or some other chemical brain imbalance. I've lived with it all my life but was only diagnosed about 4 years ago. You can get counseling to help you work with your problem and it will take a long time to get the right drug combination (if that's what you need) that's right for you. Your doctor may recommend being hospitalized to begin any necessary and immediate drug therapy. Your family physician can recommend a psych. Also, try re-examining your belief or lack thereof. People who believe in the Lord and pray are healthier in general than those who don't. Repeated studies have proved it to be so. Ask the Lord for help and don't hesitate.

Change is not something which happens instantly. You have to decide to do something different each day. For you, I would suggest each day asking yourself at the end of the day, what did I do today that I didnt do yesterday in working towards my goal of happiness? If you can't come up with an snwer then you know the problem...your not being creative or not trying. Things just dont happen to you. You simply just dont wake up the next day and expect to be happy. Like everything else, you need to determine a goal and then figure out a way to achieve that goal. Just do something different each day and eventually you will discover what works.
Hope this helps!
P.S. By you posting this...your already doing something different

There is a difference between suicidal ideation (thoughts) and having a plan. Everyone thinks about killing themselves at one time or another - most people wont admit it.
However, I would recommend you speak with a professional about these concerns. Have you been diagnosed depressed? If so, are you on meds? Depending on your age, some medication can actually lead you to have suicidial ideations, so I would definetely check into that.
What does atheism have to do with hating yourself? And what makes your friends so great that you feel envious about them and their lives? Lots of things to think about - hence the referral to a counselor. If you need help let me know, im in the field.

One suggestion is this: Do NOT feed your depressed emotions by listening to depressing music and watching depressing movies. Even if you feel like that's the stuff you relate to, it's bringing you down. NEVER listen to (above all other musical choices) The Cure! I repeat.... never listen to The Cure if you want to get out of a depressing fog.
Try listening to The Beatles, especially albums Help!, Rubber Soul, and Revolver. Crank up the vlume and listen to the amazing drum and bass rhythms that underline the great vocal melodies. If you have any soul what so ever, you'll uncontrolably start tapping your foot and bobbing your head and singing along. (Of course that's just my personal musical opinion)

If you think that this is a one-time ride then ending it early with only one try at it seems kinda dumb doesnt it? if you want to end your life then end it. But not by suicide. Hop a slow train, ride it until you are too hungry to go any farther, get off and start over. You still might die but at least its not by giving up after one try. And who knows, you might stumble into a really good life. Roll the dice and see.

When you feel better about yourself the envy will decrease. Depression will get better over time if you try to get better. It may take alot of time and patience. sometimes it takes years. but just keep trying, it will happen.

once, i wanted to die, and had myself shot by the police. i ALMOST died. instead of dying, i went to prison for a while. when i got out of prison i was so happy. i was allowed to be around pretty girls again. i was allowed to get my own place and eat ice-cream whenever i wanted. i was allowed to watch the stars twinkle at night. to this day, my life is a dream simply because i can watch the leaves blow through the trees and grin...
suicide is a trick - and a dirty one.
hang in there - your life will get better - it comes in waves - good and bad - you will see..

Have a happy song around you. Play it, sing it, hear it, think it; with a song in your head, there will be no room for anything else.
