The transistor is a great one. Almost every electronic device we have depends on these small, seemingly insignificant devices. The transistor allows the Internet, personal computers, televisions, cellular telephones, and a host of other everyday items to be possible.

FYI: The automobile would not qualify for this type of project since it was invented prior to 1900.

the affordable, practical automobile. Yes, there were cars before 1900, but it is not until the model-T that you really see cars. So the assembly line-created after 1900 led to cars that everyone could buy. computers are certainly not the most profound invention. nuclear weapons had a large impact. welding was also developed in the 20th century. before, you would have to rivet things together

I'd also say the automobile. Without the transportation of goods would be much more difficult. The UAW is one of the last unions with any kind of pull left, but unions are what allowed so many Americans to achieve such a great standard of living. And of course the auto industry has a huge lobby, and most automobiles are dependant on the production of oil to actually work properly. The automobile also can be a status symbol. Additionally, it allows for a certain amount of freedom.

It would be the transistor. The automobile was invented before 1900.

I had a professor who said it was the phase lock loop which is a significant event. The phase lock loop is critical in communications, television, computers and navigation. Imagine a world without radio or television. Maybe he was right.

====> The transistor <====

ALL current technology is basd on this simple device. Without the transistor, we could not have space programs, Personal Computers, critical medical equipment, cell phones, the hubble telescope, CD and DVD players, on and on.

Thanks to Personal Computers, Intel and Microsoft have a huge market of consumers to sell products to. Companies such as Motorola, Sony, Dell, HP and such also would not have a market without transistors to shrink the size of consumer equipment, which means that employees would not have the related jobs.
