It is the mind that desires and wants everything to posses. The body in the contrary needs only few things to survive .If we obey the principles of body and we can live with only the basic needs .If the mind can be diverted from trespassing the needs of body one can think high and live in simplicity. We can say if body needs water mind will ask Coke.Water is the need and coke is a wanting .I feel this difference between the needs and wants have to be differentiated.

According to Sartre and others, Man has an empty space known as Nothingness. It can be quite the black hole, where it only desires and never reciprocates. It is said to reside in Consciousness.

Man is dynamic and never static unless he has the willpower to live with what he has or other circumstances. And since Man tires with one object over time, that is why he changes to something different. That is how temporality affects our choices: Since we live once, we have the urge to do everything, have everything, and what not before we die because it is just human nature to exhaust and discover resources of happiness and etc.

I think people always want more because of advertising. When watching tv, we are bombarded with ads for cars, vacations, trips, watches, items, things, and the commercials tell us that all these "wants" are actually "needs".

Also, I think people naturally want to have one better than others. It's a competition.

Maybe I'm stretching it, but humans in the past were hunter/gatherers, maybe our desire for many things is just a leftover from our past, where excess food, excess fur, excess firewood etc ensured our survival.

That's easy; though we can live with less, we see people who live with more, hence the acute feeling of the disparity. Materialism as it relates to "need" and "want" may be said to break down thus, at least as far as perspective in relation to others:

"Less" is one thing, "lesser" is quite another, and "least" is the most unfavourable of all.

our desires are based on building.
we are creative beings and as such, we require a medium to express upon or through. We gather inspirational 'things" that feed our creativity. a stick from a certain forest or tree that represents a notion, though or philosophy. From that inspirational thing we build.
We like art and nice things. It benefits society to make them, and the artist when we buy them.
In my office, I tend to surround myself with blueprints, machine parts and the like. In my library I tend to surround myself with antiquities, Old swords, dinosaur bones, gargoyles and classic art from the Romanesque period.
In the living room, I like fine wood furniture with leather and natural fibers. Medieval sculptures from England and Ireland, France and Germany. Antique clocks and other romantic bobbles. The are instrumental in demonstrating for others what history teaches us. and just nice to have around.

Our possessions help to distract us from the fact that one day we will die. If we had no distractions and followed a strict schedule we think a lot about what is and what will happen. This will lead us to conclusions we don't want to consider.

it's all connected to the sex drive. for the male, possesions were proof that he could provide for a woman's children and so could breed with her.
for a woman, possessions meant tat she could provide for her own children.
today, advetisers work on that ... if you get X, u'll be sexy and desirable.... so we buy and buy and dont know what to do with half the stuff we got.
oh well...
