In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death. ~ Anne Frank

I understand her to be saying she is refusing to give in to despair. I definitely agree with that sentiment.

Anne Frank’s words are a desperate plea for people to hang onto hope; it makes the truth (confusion, misery and death) more bearable.

No.
People are neither inherently good nor evil. Individually, we are all selfish at heart. We tend to put our own desires when idealizing the "perfect" society. If we are all truly "good at heart," there would be no need for discipline.

Rather, people are conditioned (taught) to be "good" and "evil," though each individual and culture has varying definitions of both terms. Though it would be ludicrous to build hopes upon confusion, misery and death, it does not mean that otherwise good intentions would not end up resulting in such negative attributes.

Agree. To think otherwise gives little meaning for existing. Only the far left feels we are a bad people. Give someone a good reason and the best will always come out of them. If the other were correct Jerry would get nothing on Labor Day. Peace

To read what happen to Anne and others who die in the holocaust.
I get mix feelings.
People are capable of doing great and wonderful things and others do horror that is beyond our imagination.

It could be seen on 9/11 during the worst attack on US soil in history by the worst evil possible.
Yet we came together and help each out of the rubble.

I want to believe and agree with Anne.

Maybe I have seen too much to doubt her and for that I am not proud of myself.

I believe that people start out good at heart and then something happens to turn them away from the light. In an ideal world, their life journey would then be towards finding the light again, but sadly, many people decide it's comfortable in endarkenment, as I call it, and are too frightened to move out of it. I would put Bush and Cheney in this group of people, as one sign of moving towards the light is an open-mindedness that allows a person to consider new ideas or rethink old ones.

I agree that you cannot build up hope on a foundation of confusion, misery, and death!

Makes you wonder how this administration thought they could do just that in Iraq!

Think about it.

People are inconsistent. 'Good at heart' doesn't always translate to the helping hand you need 'right this minute'. About all I can say about this is that if you have a chance to do good in the world...take it. It can't hurt!

Ms. Frank had a strong relationship with God.

What she should have written was that the strength of her foundation was based upon God's promise that evil will not triumph over good.

I no longer agree with that premise. Free will has gone awry and the darkest aspects of human nature have emerged on a dangerous level.

I find the answers interesting - the far righters seem to be almost perfect pessimists. Apparently everyone is evil (sin or some other such bad mojo) to them and there is no hope for the future.

No wonder they always cheerlead for war.

Personally I'm neutral to any one individual, but my experience is most people are good hearted.
