I would have fallen over backwards for a $20 tip! Don't get me wrong, I love kids, just the well-behaved ones which are a rarity these days. Usually from my experience a server sees that many kids in their section and they groan. $20 is a marvelous tip. Keep up the good work. There's going to be 5 great and polite adults in this world in a few years! And lord knows the world has a shortage of them. :)

It seems the 7(?) of you all had a great time at the Swiss chalet pretty much thanks to a great service and a very pleasant waitress who took time to make some nice comments about the kids.
The $20 tip (without knowing what the bill was) breaks down to $3.00 per person she served. It sounds a little on the low side esp since it was a "Swiss chalet" that food tends to be expensive.
As a rule of thumb 20% of the total bill is expected and if the service was extraordinary (as in your case) anything above it is appreciated.
BTW, dining in an expensive restaurant is your choice and if you can afford to pay the food there you should be able to afford the tips that often are the only source of income for the waitress

I would think so. Most people don't get that kind of tip very often and seeing as you have five kids and raising a family I really think that was nice of you. But if you want the real answer I as far as like restaurant policy or something I believe your suppose to give 20 percent of the total cost to her in tip form so pay the bill and 20 percent of whatever that number is you give for a tip to her or him. At least I think but also it depends on where you live. And that restaurant's policy.

It depends on how much the bill was. If your bill was under $100 then yes. If your bill was $150 then it was not. It depends. 20% and above is considered a good tip.

I always reward good service with a 20% tip...........you didn't say how much your bill was without tax so I don't know if $20 was a good tip..........a general rule of thumb is to tip 20% of the bill without the tax.

15% of what your bill was. If a waitress was awesome, then add an extra $ 5.00.
