I'm thinking of taking Bob Ross painting classes. When I'm finished, I'd like to be able to sell my paintings at the flea market, or at outdoor malls, or at shows or festivals. If I learn the Bob Ross techinques, would I be able to sell them legally or are there laws that would prevent me from doing so as I will be using the techniques of another painter?

You can sell the paintings. Every painter is using someone elses techniques-the teacher they learned from, the teachers, teacher and so on. If you copy a bob ross painting exactly, you have to let it be known that it is a bob ross copy. Using his techniques with an original painting of your own is perfectly legal. I do believe if you look in bob ross's books it may say something like you can copy his paintings but not for commercial purposes.

I'm assuming you already know how to paint. If so, the only thing that Bob Ross can show you IS techniques. You will learn from his techniques and soon learn your own, and your own style. That is what you want to sell, to sell your own style.

I am a painter too, and have ordered Bob's classes years ago. I had my own style and techniques, but had trouble on a few things because I was trying new subjects.

Any teacher or artist can show you their way, but you need to form your way. You will be more satisfied with your paintings, especially when you sell your first YOU painting.

Good Luck, and believe in yourself.

O.K. In general when you sell a copy of anything you have to disclose it is a copy or a reproduction. You next problem is Copyright. If the work you are copying has a Copyright protection, then you need permission from the holder of the copyright and you will probably have to pay this person a fee. Not all paintings are under Copyright protection. Copyrights do not last forever. They eventually expire and beocme part of the Public Domain. When something is in the Public Domain it can be used by anyone without paying a fee. I do not know how long a Copyright lasts. But they can last even after the Copyright holder dies. So yes you can sell copies of other works of art if they are in the Public Domain and you sell them as copies.

if you painted it and are not representing it as someone else's work then you can legally sell them. There is no law that says you can not use a technique that you learned elsewhere. Good Luck.

No, you can sell them as your own. You just can't copy one of his, but since no two paintings are exactly alike, it would legally be your design anyway.
