I'm going to assume you are a competent computer user with no design experience whatsoever. By competent I mean:

1. You understand how to navigate files and folders, and make new ones. You know what a file extension is, and what it does.

2. You can install and uninstall programs and hardware. You have a rough understanding of networking.

3. You can use applications like Excel and Word and know how to use the help files.

4. You are good with the web. You have some understanding of the technology that is behind the pages. You are comfortable using web applications like Web Mail Clients, Picture Web Sites, MySpace, Amazon, Paypal to name a few. You could make your own blog with one of the many available packages.

ASP is back end scripting for web applications. Before you dive into asp.net you are going to want to learn some website design basics. You need to learn some HTML. It is fairly simple and you will be reasonably competent within a month if you give it about 6 hours a week. Build some very basic web pages. Next you would want to learn some CSS. This language lets us change the layout and the format of the pages we build with HTML. Spend another 24 hours studying that, while formatting some web pages with it. Now you need to learn how to code VB script. You should learn the various programming control statements here. Learning some Javascript would also be a good idea. This will take another 48 hours study time. Now you are 4 months in and ready to start learning ASP.net.

That 4 months is a conservative estimate. It may take longer. You will need learn some SQL along with your ASP because almost all ASP applications work with databases. You will also need to learn about web servers. To help you get experience you would need to be involved with some projects. Finding the right mentors would be key. You will have 8 months or less with to get this done within your time limit. Compound the issue is the fact that ASP coders often know other technologies such as Flash, PHP, #C, and XML. Go to Career Builder and search your area for jobs with keyword ASP.NET, and you will see what I'm talking about.

The more you know already of these things the better. It's a tough road with plenty of competition that I am on myself. I think what drives me is a deep love for coding. If you don't think you can sit for hours on end writing and testing code, don't even attempt it. If the joy of learning the technology can drive you, you might just make it.

Here's a link to w3schools. It's a great site for beginners.
