If it is the Sox vs Yanks, who has home field? I thought the Yanks did because of the head to head but I just saw a report saying the Sox do because of overall record.

Red Sox do because the Sox won the division.
Divisional leaders playing a wild card the divitional leader gets home atvantage even if the wild card has a better recored

The Wild Card winner will never have home field advantage in the playoffs, even if their record is better than the team they are playing. That's one of the rewards for winning your division. If you can't even win your division during the regular season, you're lucky to even be in the playoffs.
Home field advantage in the World Series is decided by the winner of the All-Star game. This was changed a couple of years ago by Genius Commissioner Bud Selig, who after declaring the All-Star game a tie (and suffering quite a media backlash) wanted to make the game relevant again. Home field used to alternate between the NL and AL.

I could have sworn the Sox did because of overall record, but I heard today on the Indians-Yankees broadcast that the Yanks will have HFA...not quite sure.

Usually the HFA goes to the team with the best record. In case of equal record than they go for head-to-head record. In this case if Boston had a better record than they are getting HFA

BoSox have home field as long as they survive. Best record (tie w/ Cleveland but better head to head), won the division over NY, All-Star game went to AL.
