I've recently re-watched Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, both the original 1979 release and the longer, more surreal re-cut, Apocalypse Now Redux. An awesome vision of a journey through the heart of darkness, set in the Vietnam war.
Incredible film-making, every step of the way--more to see and think about with each viewing.

I can think of a number, but the one that comes to mind is
"Wings of Desire" by Wim Wenders.
I had just never seen anything quite like it.I haven't really seen anything like it since.Including Wenders much inferior sequel.
It's about two ancient angels who wander the city of Berlin.
One falls in love with a woman who performs trapeze for a small traveling circus.
He chooses to fall to earth, and live a mortal life to be with her.
And yes,Hollywood made a cruddy remake.
See the original.

I have seen thousands of brilliant movies, including films from other countries other than US, the ones I have mentioned are amazing movies because of their simplicity and yet deep themes...but there're so many others too...

The latest movies to have that effect on me...
Blood Diamond
Apocalypto
Both visually stunning and exciting while telling a story.
In my life, Wings of Desire, Jean de Florette and City of God, German, French and Brazillian.
