It is called accountability.
If your business is building a responsible company that treats all stakeholders, from share holders to neighbors honorably, there is little that regulation will do to hurt you. And much to help.
If you are making an excess profit by cheating any or all of the stakeholders, conning the shareholders, exploiting the workers, or poisoning the neighbors, in any of the thousands of ways that sort of thing is done then not only do you do the direct damage, but you also make it impossible for an honorable businessperson to compete. There has to be some mechanism for the society to say NO.
In a Good society, it falls to the elected Government to act as the agent of the society, and police against those criminals. If the Government is a poor policeman, none but criminals can stay in business.
The current Gang Of Pirates masquerading as the American Government has been particularly awful in that regard, hiring crony imbeciles to run the agencies of support for the population like FEMA, and the worst criminals in charge of the policing agency that should be arresting them, like hiring Al Capone to stamp out bootlegging.
That is why once thriving cities like Detroit are blighted ghost towns where the biggest plants are parking lot weeds, and MallWarts foul the nest of Small Town America, like ugly parasitic Cuckoos draining the life energy of the town, having eaten the legitimate offspring.
That is why there is poison in everything from toys to toothpaste, because there is an extra buck to be squeezed out, and no accountability anywhere, Perhaps that Libertarian Lie will now be exposed.

THere should be WAAAAAAYYY less regulation of the businesses in our country. If a business is run poorly, they wont last long. The government uses businesses to make billions of dollars for itself. The make everyone get licences , which they have to pay for, along with permits, registrations, insurances, taxes, etc.. they get fees for everything, making it very difficult for a small business person to afford to work. There is no reason a person should have to have a license to cut hair, or sell a house. This license does not guarantee that they are a good hairdresser, just that they paid a fee. If you hate the way they cut your hair, you won't go to them again. This principle applies in a lot of ways to different businesses. There needs to be SOME regulation for sure, but its gone way overboard. The goverment was NOT intended to be the big babysitter over the american people.

The government here in the states should regulate business as it is designed to... there are laws that govern regulation of monopolies. Like when there is only one power company in your area... it should be regulated because it is a product that local laws force you to buy. (In my town, your home is condemned if you do not have power)

In a perfect world, the businesses wouldn't need regulating. I say we aspire to perfection by only regulating where absolutely necessary to directly protect natural human rights (life, liberty, property, the pursuit of happiness -- and don't say that price gouging is a violation of one's right to property, because it isn't as you can easily go find a different company with a lower price).

Businesses must be regulated by the government in its entirety in order that the customer will be protected from abuses.
