Hi! I've been singing all my life and have enjoyed some marvelous roles in musicals. Now at age 51, I am a semi- professional singer in Philadelphia and I'd like to hit some Broadway musical auditions. I am a member of SAG right now. Is it better to be an Equity member before hitting Broadway? I believe I can join Equity through a back-door policy since I am a member of SAG. Any thoughts are most welcome!

If you don't have to join Equity, I would wait. You can attend the Broadway auditions listed on the Actors Equity website. Many non-union actors do this (get in line early!!) and it's pretty expected, especially since the musicals tend to cast for replacements every 6 months or so.

If you're serious about going for Broadway, I believe it's better to join. In Hollywood it's different where you can join the union after you get a role, but in NY I believe you can't even audition in many instances unless you're Equity. Since I am not a NY actor, please don't take my word for it. Go directly to the source http://actorsequity.com/ Click on Casting Call and look at the calls they have for Eastern Region and look at the calls particularly for NY. See if most of them require you to be Equity to audition. Here on the West Coast some do, some don't but I really don't know for NY but I thought I heard that you did have to be Equity.

Since all you have to do to join equity is pay the initiation fee, I'd wait until I was in an equity show to join. your sag membership and resume will be enough to open the door for you to audition. Your age could keep you out of many casts.

Actually not from what I've heard from a "Jersey Boys" principal character..... He was non-Equity, tried out for a part, then was cast in their National Tour. Now, he's performing at one of the "semi" permanent Jersey Boys venues.

If I were you, I'd definitely answer those ads and go for it! Good luck!
