I just bought a new mouthguard today, the kid you boil for 12 secs, much like the last one I had. Question is i paid, $2.49 for a black strapped no name style, made by Shock Doctor. On the other end of the scale, the same company makes flashy coloured models that were more than $20. Any dentists out there, what are you getting in a $20 model aside from an insurance policy that I suspect would be very difficult to collect on if you lose your teeth. And what does a custom fitted one costing three figures offer over the $20 one? PS I am happy with the $2.49 one given the level of play and position (goal) I play at.

Just so you know i think the 20 dollar ones if i am thinking of the same one offer more protection and breathability

some are a little bulkier, or double sided and then have breathing hole

they i think tend to offer better protection as far as the force translating from your jaw to your teeth and brain

really though i think the cheap ones do a pretty good job, i dunno practically if it is worth it, but maybe it is if you save some teeth

Custom fitted ones are just less bulky. People with breathing problems (not getting enough air in) would want a custom one. But the $2.49 one is the way to go. I think the $20 are just expensive because you said it...they're flashy and colored. You're paying for the style! I'd stick with what you got. Good question though.

Fit is everything. If it fits OK and you can breathe OK then it doesn't matter.
