The best winter jacket is one that is comfortable in all weather conditions so I would suggest one with a zip out liner. I think the best quality is Northface, Sierra Designs and if you are looking to save some money Columbia Titanium is OK. Of course, for water proof conditions and hours in wet weather there is nothing that can even come close to GoreTex for Extreme Wet Weather - look for the certification tag!!

If you can't find one with a removable liner, just get a shell and get a really good seperate windproof fleece under it. On a cool day you can wear the fleece only, on a wet day you can wear the shell only, and when it is really cold you can wear both.

My boyfriend (from Michigan) loves his Columbia for it's light weight, versatility and the ability to keep him warm and dry. He's worn it comfortably in -40 degree weather as well as day to day needs.
