The same kind you breathe!

Or any other kind -- it really makes little difference,
so long as the pressure is the same, to maintain its bounce.

Since the gas is contained inside, it hardly matters -- unless
you have a leaky ball. Even that is not a problem, unless the gas is something FLAMMABLE (like methane or propane, which is what some idiots allow into their kitchens to cook with! Not me!!!)

If you are stupid enough to fill a soccerball with flammable gas,
then it WILL be somewhat lighter (6 or 10 grams per 22.4 liter mole, instead of 28 grams per mole for Nitrogen or breathing air). However, the volume of a soccerball is a small fraction of a mole, and the plastic/rubber covering weighs much, much more than the gas inside, so the weight is hardly affected. (Compressibility might be affected slightly, but I doubt you could tell the difference!)

Filling your soccerball with cooking puts your teammates (and opponents and spectators) at risk, but has little effect on the game (unless it blows up at the right time, and kills your opponent! :^)
Aside from that, your coach was a victim of an urban legend.
(Check out snopes.com to debunk such things.)

Just gently unhatch the natural gas-line from your stove/oven. Then place the needle into the tip of the fume-spewing hose. Then, fill your ball. Congratulations, you can now play with your new ball near open flames.

SERIOUSLY, don't do that. Maybe you heard your uncle wrong but the gas from a kitchen is definitely unsafe. This is an American Football forum. So, you might not get credible answers.

Just normal air will be fine. I believe filling soccer balls with natural gas is not recommended due to the risk of explosion.

A Soccer Ball is, inflated with Helium. Make sure to hit it real hard, the first time. this helps to soften the materials.

NOT a good idea.

Kitchen gas is used to COOK things.
Why would you want to play with a FLAMMABLE soccer ball?

Does you uncle think it will bounce better off his head?
Maybe that's he got that way.
(Does he smoke?)

I'd recommend Helium and see if you can kick it farther.

If you play soccer you can probably blow it up yourself, just seal your lips over the hole and blow till it's full
