A good candidate:
(1) Doesn't pretend to know the answers.
(2) Has written a book, "All the Dumb Things I Did as a Kid, and What I Learned from the Experience," and refers questions about his past to his book.
(3) Retied from the military (e.g. Eisenhower), or had an exemplary record (e.g., Kennedy)
(4) Is smart enough to pick advisors, and perhaps even cabinet from other parties, based on expertise, not politics.
(5) Tells campaign donors, "Thanks. But if you're expecting special consideration, or to purchase my ear, I'll refund your donation. I'm not running for office to serve any interest group except the American people."
(6) Will honor his or her commitment to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, against all enemies, foreign and domestic.. including those who abuse the Constitution and expect to be protected by it.
(7) Doesn't know the meaning of the word "can't" and who doesn't allow anybody in the government to use it.
(8) Keeps the press in its place by releasing information he or she feels is pertinent to the American people... and nothing more. Who tells the press, "Anything official with regard to national or international policy comes from this office. Anything else is pure speculation. If I see any source printing such speculation without absolute confirmation from this office, the closest that source will get to a government installation is a city park to cover a kid's birthday party."
(9) Selects a Secretary of Defense with an exemplary military background, with combat experience, and who has lost men on the field of battle.
(10) Is not afraid to immediately declare a state of martial law to quell riots.
(11) has never been a lawyer.
(12) Looks out for the Country and it's citizens (collectively... not individually) before all else.
(13) Sticks to issues and does not bash the competition.

A bad candidate lacks in one or more of those areas.

One poster suggested that a good candidate is one that is supported by the people. That's wrong. The popular teacher is not always the best. The boss that everybody likes is not always the one who can get things done.

Other posters suggested specific candidates. The only choice in the last 40-some years has been the lesser of sometimes pretty terrible evils.

The way to learn about candidates and issues is to observe, listen, and ask questions. As soon as one starts stating ones opinion, one is no longer learning. That one thinks he or she knows all that needs to be known and has made up his or her mind.

Even in small local clubs, there rarely is a GOOD candidate. On a national level, only the naive would subscribe to such a concept. For something as complex as a nation, a candidate will have many facets to contend with, and some will be agreeable to certain voters while other facets will be disagreeable. You have to decide whether the aggreeable ones outweight the disagreeable ones. That makes the candidate the Lesser of the Two Evils, since you're going to have to suffer the disagreeable facets. They just won't be as bad as the disagreeable facets of the opposing candidate.

A good candidate means that the candidate is supported by the people and probably will be able to accomplish things during their term. The less worst candidate means that none of the candidates are supported much or at all by the people. The less worst candidate is chosen only because someone has to be chosen and the other candidates are worse than the candidate chosen.

A good candidate is no one that is running. Less worst is what we have to choose from. What the hell am I afraid of? Ron Paul getting elected. Not really. There has to be a basis for fear.

A good candidate has merit based on their own candidacy
(their experience, ideas, etc...)

The "less worst" as you put it has merit that is based on comparison to the other candidates, who you think are a worse choice for whatever reason.

People always seem to judge the candidate when they should be judging the policies. Its no wonder the world is in such a mess. Popularity doesn't always make good sense.
